A Business Case provides a high level overview of why an improvement project is worth doing. It captures the reason for initiating a project and supports the decision making process. This is especially important if the project will consume a significant amount of funding or staff time.
In the first instance an Outline Business Case which contains a high level overview should be prepared. This is usually sufficient to authorise the Initiation stage. This should be refined and updated during the Initiation and Planning phases to become a Full Business Case.
If an improvement project is large in scale it may be necessary to gain Business Case approval from key stakeholders before progressing to the Initiation phase.
Development of a formal Business Case may depend upon the size or complexity of your improvement project.
